One-way transatlantic flow tops other box trades in profitability

Jan.11--THE transatlantic container trade, with a strong dollar sucking imports and weakened has depressed exports is the key characteristic of the traffic, reports IHS Media.

And with the dollar at a 12-year high against the euro and still gaining on sterling, transatlantic US imports are expected to grow through 2016.

Currency fluctuations has widened the imbalance between the eastbound and westbound trades in the first eight months and responsible for the 6.7 per cent decline in eastbound shipments.

The Europe-bound slump was worsened by an 11 per cent fall in Canadian exports, which account for around a fifth of the eastbound trade compared to a 6.2 per cent drop in outbound US. shipments and a 1.3 per cent slip in Mexican sales.
